Everyone loves having a holiday to look forward to but it’s getting harder and harder with all this increased cost of living. That’s probably why families are turning to road trips as a cost-effective way to take holidays and choosing free campsites along their route. If you’re keen to escape somewhere warm here are the best cheapest and free campsites to choose from in Queensland

Endeavour Park Camping site, Stanage Bay

Two hours’ drive north of Rockhampton, this campground is free but welcomes donations from anyone who chooses to stay.Accessible for 2WD’s, trailers, vans, caravans and buses, it’s also pets friendly if you’re bringing along your furry friend. With spots right on the water where you can set up your tent, there’s also great fishing in the area. It’s also right near the local pub, if you’re sick of cooking.

Corella Dam Camping site

Sixty kilometres outside of Mount Isa, you’ll find Corella Damn, which also has a free campsite that welcomes visitors with pets. If you’ve got a kayak, you’ll definitely want to bring it along to make the most of the water access, otherwise you can amuse yourself with fishing and swimming. Many have claimed this to be one of the best free camp spots in the country, thanks how peaceful and quiet it is. Notch Point Camping site

Notch Point Camping site is found 40 minutes south of Sarina in the Mackay region. Families love parking up here for a few nights, as it’s one of the best fishing spots for whiting and flathead. You can also bring your dog! The best part? If you visit in June, you might spot some whales in the water.

Munall Campground, Blackdown Tableland Camping site

In the Central Highlands region, this campground is set in a quiet and shady forest in the heart of a National Park. Accessed via an unsealed road, it’s not suitable for trailers or vans.This is a great spot for active families. From the campground there is a 4.2km return hike to hidden swimming holes and a range of other walking tracks. Pack a picnic and head to Horseshoe lookout for stunning views. Though it’s a paid site, it’ll only set you back $7.25 per person, or $29.00 per family per night – there are toilets and fire rings for you to use too. Downside it’s a national park you’ll have to leave the pets at home.

Leichhardt Falls Free Camp, Burketown

The perfect place to stop on a long road trip, you’ll find this free camping spot on the Savannah Way, about 425km north of Mount Isa. It’s accessible only by 4WD and dogs are welcome. Located along the edges of Leichhardt Falls, the clifftops provide an uninterrupted bird’s eye view of the water and epic sunsets. However, just please admire the water from afar – thecrocs in the area means that swimming is forbidden.
